Tyler Has Words is the blog of Tyler Patrick Wood, a writer/musician from Texas. You'll get free book excerpts twice a week. On the other days, you'll get words. If you would like an original take on everything by an expert on nothing, this might be a cool place to hang out.

About Hacks

About Hacks

Post 3:

Aren’t we all hacks? This might be a running theme, and I’ll try not to blather, but I do wonder. I believe I’ve stumbled onto a serious metaphysical question here—I say stumble because I’m too hacky to be anything like a real philosopher. My thing is typing words that sometimes make sense in sequence. That’s my thing. And I’m a hack at my thing.

Probably best to define our terms. By hack, I mean someone that really is giving it a go, really trying, only they’re not quite up to the mark. Maybe not even close. This does not include me playing basketball. That’s just pure comedy, because I have no sense of the game, never learned to play properly. My buddies have made fun of me since whenever, and I’ll admit, it’s hysterical to watch. When I’m on the court I don’t think it’s proper to invoke the word hack. Why? My basketball skills don’t qualify me for hack status, nor do I purport to be a “basketball player” with any pedigree.

Okay. Definitions are boring, but sometimes necessary. Let’s get back to people that do so purport, that do possess the requisite skills. Here’s what I mean. The best writer, director, editor, yoga instructor, all of them have pulled hack moves. And not just when they were starting out. I’m talking beginning, middle, and end. Think Russell Crowe trying to sing. Save that in your brain. It’s a “metaphor.” But so what? Everybody sucks some of the time. Impossible not to. Entropy. Chaos. No doubt some are better at covering it up, but they’re conmen like the rest of us. Be the best hack you can be. The good news is, you’re frigging brilliant some of the other times.

Hacks of the world. Keep it up. Time to get back. See you after.
