About Community
Post 144:
Today I had to stand in a long line for lunch. The line was long because it was this really greasy burger place, and greasy burgers are awesome. They also make people feel ashamed. We’re not supposed to go to greasy burger places anymore, because we’ll die.
So I’m feeling pretty good. I ordered two, by the way. And yes, I did my peremptory five sit-ups today, so my health is A-OK.
Let’s get back to the line. Let’s call it the queue, just be cool. It was probably fifteen people long. All of us were alone. I had my headphones on. Most people were thumbing their cellphones into mush. Some people were talking to themselves. Others just stood and waited, entire bodies shamefully salivating in advance of their horrific pounds of flesh.
I don’t know, some folks might have been talking to each other, but I didn’t see it. It bothered me a little, or at least, made me sad.
That should’ve been the most friendly group of strangers ever. We’re all slightly (if not completely) ashamed of our choices, we’ll probably never see each other again, and heck, it might be a chance to meet somebody with similar interests. Yet we waste the twenty minutes in self-loathing or playing with our phones for diversion. Like I said, a waste. Community is important, people. Use every opportunity. Eat everything on your plate.
I couldn’t resist that last one. Sorry.
See you after.
