Tyler Has Words is the blog of Tyler Patrick Wood, a writer/musician from Texas. You'll get free book excerpts twice a week. On the other days, you'll get words. If you would like an original take on everything by an expert on nothing, this might be a cool place to hang out.

About A Sock And A Dream

About A Sock And A Dream

Post 289:

There’s a guy out there who is really obsessed with socks. Not just wearing them. Actually, wearing them is the problem. He’s not satisfied with his sock-wearing experience. Some days he gets along well enough, but it’s always a bit of a compromise. In his mind, the entire sock situation should be better.

So he’s setting off to change things, one foot at a time, one foot in front of the other. There are plans. Designs. Prototypes. This guy is ready to take the sock world by storm.

The other night though, he went out with his buddies. A few beers later, the questions start flooding in, threatening to rise over the dam that is his formidable patience:

“Aren’t there enough socks in the world?”

“Dude, who are you to think you make a better sock?”

“Stick to your real job. That’s best in the long run, right?”

            And so on.

Now this is nothing that our friend hasn’t dealt with before. They’re all valid concerns, questions, comments. Nothing inherently wrong with being a little skeptical. But what can he do in the face of it?

            Anything, I suppose.

Abandon all hope, for the ramparts are menacing and the approach is too steep. Raise the white flag, slink back into the decidedly more predictable world that’s readily available.

After all, to get chips in a game that’s already in progress, you’re going to have to learn some new tricks. Adapt your thinking. Adapt you. None of that is easy. It’s downright burdensome at times, actually, and can leave one in a state of disillusionment. Better to drop the whole thing.

            Or he make some socks.

I’m hoping he goes with the latter.

            Later. See you after then.
