Tyler Has Words is the blog of Tyler Patrick Wood, a writer/musician from Texas. You'll get free book excerpts twice a week. On the other days, you'll get words. If you would like an original take on everything by an expert on nothing, this might be a cool place to hang out.

About The Day After

About The Day After

Post 431:

Some days leave a person feeling like it might’ve been better to just stay in bed. Call the game due to rain. Raise the white flag. Frigging forfeit. A feeling of futility, like everything you tried just came to nothing. That’s a crappy sensation.

            But it happens.

For most people, the feeling passes. (Unless it’s a chronic condition)

Question: What does one learn after the day is done and that sensation of quicksand has passed? Is there anything to learn?

Depends. Maybe God gives us days like that to know that we are just renting a little time here and that it can all be snuffed out or snapped up or swatted away or some other S word.

That’s a tough one, but probably good to remember every so often. Telling yourself to be humble and being humbled by existence are two very different things, after all.

Those tough days are like getting hit, because you gotta do something afterward. Everyone has a plan until they get hit, said some famous boxer. (Tyson I think) It’s very true. So what does the day after that sad day look like? You going to be miserable again? Learn something? Change up your game, maybe recalibrate that mess?

I’ve attempted all of the above. We all have. I’ll say this: The most hopeful thing I know is that most people don’t lose hope. Even after all those days of futility. The philosophers and the theologians and the brain doctors can call that what they will, but it’s something amazing.

The day after. Pretty cool. See you then. Cheers.
