About Rolling Stoic
Post 683:
There’s these old guys that used to roll around back in the day. Romans and Greeks, mostly, though they hailed from all sorts of parts. We’re talking about the Stoics. Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, Zeno. Probably not the coolest people to party with, but the philosophy had its merits.
Rolling Stoic is a good way to go when there is literally no possible way to control every bit of your situation. This, of course, is all of life, but there are certainly times that present us with more chaos and moving parts than we are up to facing.
There is no way I’m cool being a full-time Stoic. Too emotional, or whatever. But perhaps I should be. Big problems might seem smaller. Small problems might dissolve to nothing. It’s not the environment or circumstances, but the ability to accept them.
It’s some pretty hardcore zen stuff, but there’s something to it. Of course, it’s important not to go overboard. Some crap ain’t good to roll with. And this is why life is complicated. If Marcus Aurelius hadn’t been such a Stoic, maybe he would’ve paid more attention to his crappy son. Maximus would’ve lived and everything would be better.
Philosophy. Not really cut and dry.
Cheers and see you after.
