About Hippos with Three Legs
Post 617:
Here’s what I know about sculpture: pretty much nothing. Here’s what I think I know about sculpture: there’s two basic processes—addition and subtraction. You’re either chipping away at an existing element or you’re building something out of whatever. I don’t know, ask a sculptor.
I want to talk subtraction. That’s how I work, in general. I’ve got too many ideas for a story. Things need to be carved and peeled off.
This means nothing is sacred. The more you do it, the more you realize this sacred fact. Maybe you thought you were doing a guy with two legs. Nope. Turns out it’s a hippo and it’s going to have three legs for reasons that shouldn’t matter to you because it just looks better and who are you to stand in the way of the three-legged-hippo.
So I guess there was addition and subtraction in that last scenario. I’m cool with that. Yeah. Do both. That’s the ticket to artistic excellence, fame, and things.
Cheers and see you after.
