About A Little Help

About A Little Help

Post 1014:

Maybe it’s a guy thing or a creative thing or simply a me thing, but accepting help has always been sort of weird. When I say weird, I don’t mean anything that crazy. It’s little things, not a big deal, the kind of stuff that turns soft helping hands into fists of rage bent on my immediate destruction.

Okay, maybe this situation is a little worse than I like to admit.

Not wanting help is pretty frigging strange if you think about it. The world is more or less an unrelenting beatdown, and if you don’t know what I’m talking about… eh, you’ll find out soon enough. Assistance and support is all too rare, so when it comes, you’d think we’d jump at it. Seems with all the crap being thrown our way, we’d fall down and kiss the feet of help. Help should get hugs and cookies. It shouldn’t make me feel awkward and feeble. What’s going on here?

Obviously, there’s a lot going on here. And yes I’m using a lot of hyperbole to make my point. But it’s still valid. Not for everyone and always, but I know plenty of people that very much prefer going it alone, whatever the task or the whatever the hardship.

“I’ve got it!”

We’ve all heard this phrase uttered by people sputtering as they try to hold something up that is far too heavy. We’ve heard it at work when someone’s obviously overwhelmed and there’s an impossible deadline and they have really bad pit stains from their impending failure. We’ve all said it at one point or another, unless you’re the one that hasn’t and this whole line of thought is a waste of your time. You know, because you’ve got it.

I know, I can be a real pain.

But for real, the human condition is crazytown sometimes. We take things too far sometimes. Rugged individualism and personal responsibility are good and noble qualities, though, like everything else, they aren’t everything. When you’re overwhelmed or underperforming, maybe it’s time to ask yourself if you need help. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Wait, that quote doesn’t apply here. Clearly I need help.

Cheers and see you after.
