Tyler Has Words is the blog of Tyler Patrick Wood, a writer/musician from Texas. You'll get free book excerpts twice a week. On the other days, you'll get words. If you would like an original take on everything by an expert on nothing, this might be a cool place to hang out.

About Drops in a Bucket

Post 1037:

If you have a soul you might have a thought or two when you try to add something to life’s conversation. For instance, “What the hell do I have to offer anybody? Ever? About anything?”

Or something like that.

I wouldn’t run away from those thoughts. Instead, it might be better to embrace that doubt. No, don’t self-flagellate or start crying into your pillow, but maybe let some reality sink in. We’re all kind of a drop in the bucket.

Humility is the key to most things in life, probably. The problem with humility is that it’s one of those habits that can develop into a nasty addiction. One day you’re being humble and trying to improve the quality of your work—the next, you’re on skid row wearing someone else’s underwear, waxing feebly about a hopeless ontological outlook, sleeping near a lit garbage can.

If I’ve seen it once…

The deal is to have enough confidence to go forward and enough humility to know that complete perfection and control just don’t get much stage time in this life. I didn’t make the rules.

So the deal is to not be an asshole. This is a hard ask when it comes to many of the writers and artists I’ve come to know, including myself. Even when trying your hardest, quick as Mercury, all of a sudden you can look up and see that you’re being an asshole. Don’t worry. It’s all part of the process. Not the best part. I don’t know why it’s a part, but at this point I’m humble enough to admit that it is.

For more inspiration keep blowing up my blog. Cheers and see you after.
