The Last Last Kingdom

Spoilers.

The Last Kingdom has been one of my favorite shows put out in the last few years. The main character Uhtred is a true hero, swaggering and headstrong and a little bit old fashioned. Season five is out on the Netflix and I just got finished.

Could it have concluded better? Yep. But there were a limited amount of things they could do. Uhtred’s entire destiny throughout the show was to get back to his homeland in northern England. It’s his birthright and his claim is valid.

Let’s say this. He could’ve failed and died far away from his ancestral home. They went the other way. A happy ending, at least in the sense that he retakes the lands that were stripped from him when he was captured and enslaved by the Danes as a child.

I would never dissuade anyone from watching this season, though I think it’s the weakest. The main strength in the show was the interplay between Uhtred and King Alfred. Some of the drama died with Alfred, though it’s still good.

Another strength is Uhtred and his small band of brothers. The camaraderie they share is really fun, and it’s great to watch them watching over each other in their bloody adventures. It seems that they weren’t featured as much this season; only when it was time to get things done.

The action is good. Can’t say things don’t come full circle. They like—literally do. Enjoy. It was fun, even if it played for time and ended a tad bittersweet and uncomfortable. MIght be that I’m just bummed it’s over. If it’s over. Geez. I need a new hobby.
