About If You'll Trust Me
Post 1199:
Hopefully you can trust your family and close friends. I do. Completely. I consider it a blessing. Trust is one of the big deals in life. So I don’t hand it out easily. Hopefully there are people that trust me the same way.
When you trust someone, they shouldn’t have to tell you. I bring this up because I feel like it, and because it’s one of the most used phrases in all of bad dialogue. There’s always someone looking deeply into another character’s eyes asking them for their trust.
This is one of my all time least favorite things. Couple reasons. First, it’s simply tired and unoriginal. Couldn’t they think of anything else to say to convey the exact same sentiment? Come on. Second, we the audience and them (the other character or characters) shouldn’t need to hear it. We should already know through the course of events that the person asking for trust is or is not worthy of trust. We should already know all kinds of shit about them. Because they are characters and hopefully they have character—attributes and qualities that are readily identifiable, based on what has already come before.
Don’t buy a car from someone who says it. Don’t keep going out with someone who says it. Don’t go skydiving with someone who says it.
And most importantly—don’t respect writers that use that weak sauce. I’m not saying don’t enjoy the show or the book—that’s up to you. Just respect them a little less. They weren’t respecting you. Trust me.
Cheers and see you after.
