About Twisters and Madame Bovary

Post 1608:

I took some time off from reading Madame Bovary the other day and decided to watch a movie. This was probably the greatest decision of my life. Twisters is too good to be called a movie. It’s an educational experience. Spiritual. Transcendent. What they call a life-altering, mind-shattering event.

Since I live near Oklahoma, I’m thinking about spending all my days off chasing storms. It seems really exciting and you get to meet new and interesting people. Some of them may be swept up into spiraling monster-maelstroms, but everything has its price.

I’m glad there are heroes out there who are able to look at air and predict what it’s going to destroy. We really all should call up our local legislatures and tell them to pay these wind-whisperers more money.

I’m super glad that the two best people at it are attractive and have totally different styles but actually agree on lots of stuff. That is absolutely fortuitous and frankly if you’re not impressed you have no soul.

So, really, what happens in the movie? They follow some storms. There’s a tiny bit of characterization. It’s loud and probably fun if you’re in the right mood.

I must be missing something. This ground-breaking documentary about a girl who has to conquer her very logical fear of killer tornadoes for the good of mankind alongside a toothy guy with little eyes is super important and I just don’t feel like fun is what we should be getting out of it.

Full disclosure, I skipped over some stuff. It was boring. I remember a whole town had to be wiped out so we could find out that our characters hand out free water. That was excellent. They care. Get it?

Suck it, Gustave Flaubert. Crawl out of your French grave and write me something as compelling as Twisters. I don’t think that's too much to ask. Do they even have tornadoes in France? What a joke.

Cheers and see you after.
