Tyler Has Words is the blog of Tyler Patrick Wood, a writer/musician from Texas. You'll get free book excerpts twice a week. On the other days, you'll get words. If you would like an original take on everything by an expert on nothing, this might be a cool place to hang out.

About Your Truth

About Your Truth

Post 1707:

I was out-and-about the other day, doing the pesky necessaries. I’m not one for out-and-about, but you gotta sally forth into the consumerist fray once in a while. New objects must be had and objects had must be maintained. Seriously. This isn’t going to be an invective against possessions. John Lennon was no great philosopher. Great with songs, though.

During my journey in and out of stores, shops, marts, restaurants, clothiers, outlets, emporiums, druggists, markets and bazaars, I noticed a lot of messages. By messages, I mean words meant to make me think something about a thing.

We care about your day. Let’s get you the best price. There’s no place like it. Unleash your potential. Support available. We’re on call for you. Count on us.

That kind of stuff. It’s pretty average and ordinary. Nothing new. But it’s weird, because they are almost all lies. In fact, a ton of claims are the exact opposite of the truth. I don’t even know if that’s technically a lie. It’s like a super-lie. We’re swimming in them. If someone says they want to help, they probably want to hurt. This is the way of the world. Always was. People are full of shit.

Before you get mad thinking about all the super-lies, don’t forget about all the bullshit you tell yourself that hurts more than helps. We all do it. I’ve made mental oaths to myself today I probably can’t keep.

Truth is a rare and precious commodity. Like gold or anything else worth a dang, it takes work to get it. If you want your writing to be true, you have to dig deep. Literally. Well, not literally, but literally.

Also, a little something about YOUR TRUTH. I’m not stupid and I understand that we live in a Post-Reformation Post-Reason Post-Modern world where relativity itself is even relative. But it’s not. If pure gold is pure gold, same goes for truth.

Try to make characters honest. Try to be honest about what they would say and do and put that on the page. People are dying for authenticity. We expect lies. The truth is a damn windfall these days.

Trust me. Cheers and see you after.
