About The Folk Folks

About The Folk Folks

Post 1741:

They made a movie about Bob Dylan that’s pretty good and I can say this because I recently watched it. Not so much of a coherent narrative as a bunch of different stuff that happened to a guy that exists. There are great scenes but they lack the connective tissue to really elevate it to the highest of highs. Biopics are probably tough. I’m trying to think of one that is truly outstanding… I’ll keep thinking.

I guess the major conflict is Bob’s problem with labels. He comes in to town as a folk singer and he’s good at it. Thus, the folk folks love him. He gets super famous because he’s good with words and sings weird and blows into a harmonica and it makes noise. Everything is pretty cool.

He’s a super focused dude, which makes sense. Artists gotta be artsy and self-absorbed. That’s nothing new. People try to relate to him but he’s better at relating to the next song.

As far as the next song, Bob’s not so sure it should be folk. Maybe rock or kinda country or whatever. He thinks a good thing is a good thing and labels and being in one club or another isn’t so important. The folk folks start to get unhappy.

I’ll say this. Labels can be a help or a hindrance. I get what Bob was feeling. He just wanted to do his thing.

I’ll say another thing. If you’re going to piss people off, piss off folk singers. Their wrath and ire isn’t what I’d call threatening. It’s not like pissing off the biker gangs of America or something. Bob knew who to piss off. Way to go, Bob. Cheers and see you after.
