About Paris

Post 55:

Would you like a glimpse into your future? Boom, right out of the shoot, asking weird questions. Sorry. Only, it’s on my mind. Knowing what comes next sounds helpful, but it might be the greatest of all double-edged swords.

I like this Jimmy Buffett song, He Went to Paris. Actually, I love it. He’s a really wonderful songwriter when he’s not going on about cheeseburgers, though I give him a little leniency—nothing wrong with not taking yourself too seriously.

Being a musician for so many years, a guy like Jimmy Buffett is a rarity. He can go deep or have a laugh. Well-rounded is the term.

So anyway, this song is worth having a listen to. I get a little choked up every time I hear it, and I’ve probably heard it a thousand times. Literally.

It’s a real simple melody and story of an entire man’s life. Start to finish, youth unto death. The lyrics go over the highlights. The tragedies, the good times, the highs. It’s written well enough that you feel like the man the song is about is given justice, though the entire track is probably three minutes tops.

Each time I hear it (when I’m not getting weepy) I think about a hypothetical song playing about my life. Mostly this is because I’m a narcissist, but it’s also because I wonder what that that song would be like. A good ending? A tragedy? We’re all in the midst of our lives and we really don’t know how it all ends. Might be nice to have a song full of portents and accurate forecasts. Then again, the bad news might cripple you, assuming it’s bad.

Not sure. Not sure. Yeah, I was repeating myself on purpose there. Best thing to do is listen to some quality Jimmy Buffett and let that mess flow.

Oh, the song is about a piano player. Might be another reason I’m partial to it.

I wouldn’t steer you wrong. May the future bring you happiness.

            See you after.
