About Getting a Break
Post 351:
When all is said and done, I’m a pretty regular type dude. I like sports and movies and beer and hot chicks and fill in the blank with all the other stuff dudes like.
Because my life roughly resembles the next guy’s, I try to write stories that are a little bit above the parameters of the possible. It’s partially done to be more entertaining—to infuse wonder and a sense of otherness to the narrative. Also, it’s easier.
Currently I’m reading a book called Lawn Boy by Jonathan Evison. It was a recommendation and so far it’s really a gentle and fun read. It’s about the plight of a guy that just can’t seem to get a break. One of those stories that feels unique even though we’ve all been there and really don’t need a reminder that life can suck a big bag of you know what.
But there’s heart in the character. You’ll want the protagonist to get a break. He’s not perfect, but he’s relatable. It’s a nice read that will allow you some reflection and won’t take six months of your life and Spark Notes to decipher it.
Maybe I like the book because I used to mow a lot of lawns. Nothing like having allergies in the Texas summers and sifting mulch from your nostrils. Man… those were good times.
It’s okay to be normal. Sometimes, it’s downright entertaining.
Cheers and see you after.
